Happy Monday, friends! It’s my week with the kids, which means the house is full, the laundry is multiplying, and the snack cabinet is under attack.
When it’s just me and four kids, I’ve learned something fast: I can’t do it all, and I shouldn’t. My job isn’t just to take care of them… it’s to raise them into capable, independent people. So today I’m sharing a few things we do in our house to make that happen.
The Fab Five dinner chat
Dinner is a team sport around here. I send a group text to our Fab Five chat (that’s me and my four) and ask for dinner suggestions. Everyone gets a say, and everyone has to own the choice.
Usually it’s our staples: chopped salmon subs, spaghetti, and of course… CHIPOTLE! I love ordering the family meal because there’s so much food, we always have leftovers, and it’s perfect for the five of us.
It’s a small thing, but it teaches them to think ahead, speak up, and be part of the plan.
My non-negotiables
Clothes are picked out the night before. No exceptions. Mornings are already busy enough.
Mommy does not iron the day of. If something needs ironing, you’ll be ironing it yourself that morning. Trust me, they only have to do that once before they start planning ahead. 😂
Lunch is a group effort. I typically make the main item in the morning, but they pack all their own snacks.
Saturday is chore day. We knock out chores every Saturday, exactly like I did growing up. Some traditions are worth keeping!
Take ownership of yourself
I want my kids to take pride in themselves and their appearance, so I put this one squarely in the boys’ corner.
Want a haircut? Hassle your daddy. If they want to look fresh, it’s on them to speak up and make it happen.
Lotion on those faces. Nobody leaves this house ashy. Not on my watch!
Mist that hair. Every morning, they spray their hair to get moisture in. Our spray bottle is a mix of water, oil, and leave-in conditioner, and it works wonders.
Twists require notice. If you want your hair twisted, you better let me know before the weekend… and be ready to get it done before 5pm on Sunday. I will not do Sunday night hair emergencies. 😂
LOOK AT YOURSELF IN THE MIRROR before you leave the house. Check the hair, the face, the clothes, the shoes… all of it. If you wouldn’t want your picture taken, go back and fix it!
How you take care of yourself says a lot about how you see yourself. I want my boys to walk out the door confident, moisturized, and ready. Elle NEVER had this problem because she get it from her Mommaaaaa
Fridays are grade check day
Every Friday, I log into Infinite Campus to see what’s poppin’! If anything is missing, the rule is simple: no video games until those assignments are turned in. It keeps everyone accountable, and nothing sneaks up on us at the end of the quarter.
Family meetings… quarterly edition
This one is new for us. I’m starting quarterly family meetings to touch base and talk about what’s working and what’s not. I want my kids to know their voices matter in how our home runs. We’re a team, and good teams check in.
The bigger picture
None of this is about being strict for the sake of it. It’s about preparing them for life. One day they’ll be making their own meals, ironing their own clothes, and managing their own schedules, and I want them to feel ready.
Independence is a gift I can give them now, little by little.

Your turn…
What are your non-negotiables at home? How do you teach your kids responsibility? Tell me in the comments. I’m always looking for new ideas from parents in the trenches with me!
See you Thursday… XO, Meka
